Who won the Great Debate?

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Medford residents were given the opportunity to attend a live debate between both mayoral candidates. It was an exciting time for Medford citizens, something which has not been seen during a local election for some time in our city!

Through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce and those individuals affiliated with this event, what we got was a well-planned event which was fair and balanced, although I felt that the selection of some of the questions could have been raised a notch with the hope of getting into more controversial and relevant issues, that we, as Medford citizens, need to hear.

The debate served its purpose … there was a winner, a big winner! Care to guess who that was? It was you, the citizen. You got to see the candidate who has your (the citizens’) best interest at heart … the candidate who has devoted a lifetime to helping people … the candidate who never once ignored the responsibilities of being a public servant; asking for nothing in return … the candidate who has tackled controversial issues where others have taken refuge in anonymity, too afraid to lose votes.

There is only one choice for mayor and that choice is clear … Robert M. Penta … the people’s candidate.

The difference between Mr. Penta and his opponent are quite evident.

Bob Penta has a solid grasp on the issues; he is running on a platform and he knows what steps must be taken to bring change in Medford. Bob Penta is his own person … he is not owned by any outside influences, he owes no one and his one responsibility in this endeavor in clearly to the citizens of Medford and their quality of life.

Bob Penta has run a respectable, clean and honest campaign. Bob Penta did not stoop to egregious and irresponsible tactics in this campaign and has shown respect to his opponent in a dignified manner.

The endorsements given to his opponent tell a tale. The majority of these endorsements come from outside the city and they are nothing more than a dog and pony show. They have no substance nor regard for you, the citizen of Medford. They are in it for themselves only … it’s as simple as that.

Sadly, there are some citizen groups and individuals in this city who claim to be tolerant, inclusive and unbiased, yet spend their time misinforming the public about Bob Penta on social media and will stop at nothing in an attempt to besmirch Bob Penta.

I think they should look up the definition of the words they claim to live by because their actions and behavior certainly point elsewhere.

In closing, the choice is clear. The “Great Debate” produced a winner; you the citizen. You have been given the opportunity to make the best choice for mayor of our city … and that choice is Robert M. Penta!

The “People’s Candidate”!

City Solicitor Mark E. Rumley / Medford Daily Mercury
on or about Nov. 16, 2008 (quoted from the 2nd Judge Jackson-Thompson hearing) saying:

“The one sentiment that I have heard that I take great exception to is that the city is trying to limit speech,” said Rumley. “The notion the city would censor or squelch free speech is baseless and as city solicitor I would find any such effort repugnant.”
