Gov. Charlie Baker proposes expanding involuntary hospitalizations for drug addicts

BOSTON - Gov. Charlie Baker on Thursday proposed allowing doctors to hospitalize drug addicts involuntarily for 72 hours without a court order if they pose a danger to themselves or others.

The proposal would be an expansion of the state's current civil commitment laws, which now only allow involuntary commitments without a court order for people with mental illness.
Baker said he has heard too many stories about people "pinballing in and out of" the emergency room for overdoses without getting extended treatment, then ending up back on the streets.
