Town attempts to sell advertising on Public Access TV Channel! SAUGERTIES, N.Y. >> ''
Town Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel plans to seek a legal opinion on whether the town can charge a fee for advertising on a website used for broadcasting videos from Lighthouse TV23, the town’s public access channel.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Helsmoortel said the Town Board relied on the TV23 Committee’s opinion that revenue could be accepted from commercial businesses for placing small ads and a link on the web page.
“They might have used an attorney,” he said. “We were told by the committee it was legal.”
Lighthouse TV23 supporters have proposed a rotating banner advertisement on the video player frame on the website at http://lighthousetv.peg.tv, with links directing viewers to the sponsors’ web sites.
“It’s illegal if we put it over the TV, I believe,” Helsmoortel said. “But it’s legal if we do it on the net associated with the TV station.”
