Scarpelli Indicted

Scarpelli, 68, who in January admitted taking more than $5,000 in bribes, was sentenced in District Court in Newark in front of about a dozen family and friends, including four grown children. His wife was not present, because it would have been too painful for her, said his attorney, Michael Nolan.
Scarpelli, who had held office in the Ocean County township for 12 years, in January pleaded guilty to one count of "extortion under the color of official right." Nolan argued that he receive a sentence of probation only, arguing that Scarpelli had done good and helped people while in office.
