Witnesses told the Associated Press that a man drove through a security barrier and parked in a restricted area outside the courthouse.
A police spokeswoman says the man has been detained for questioning. She says he also did not have registration plates on the vehicle.
Several survivors made statements Wednesday at the courthouse, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was set to be formally sentenced to death for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing.
The incident occurred while the court was taking a recess for lunch.
