Somerville Media Center to move by May 31, 2020...

Remember when TV3 Medford was at 5 High Street and the bunch of old buzzards claimed to the city council that they had to move due to "toxic mold" or whatever, ended up on Riverside Ave with no connectivity (moving to a place with no connectivity?????) and then had to shut down? Somerville Media Center now has to scramble to build a new studio with less than 3 months to do it. Something about water - you can read Somerville City Hall's letter here:

Greetings and happy new year!

I'm writing to follow-up on the December 20 visit to the Mayor's office. It is my understanding that two sites, Parenting Journey and City Schemes, had been identified as possible options for the temporary relocation of Somerville Media Center during the renovation of the "old firehouse" building at 90 & 92 Union Square. As I recall, Tom offered to set up introductions with the potential landlords and schedule related walk-throughs of the spaces in order to ascertain whether either would work as a short-term fit. With the holidays behind us, Joe Lynch and I fully available for those visits. Let us know the time and dates.

The December 20 meeting was certainly appreciated and we are heartened by the Mayor's commitment and support to keep SMC in the Union Square vicinity even during this unfortunate displacement while our home gets rehabilitated. While given advanced word on the city's ultimate intentions to vacate the building for rehab purposes, we are still very much in the dark on specifics regarding timing. We are calculating the impact and logistics of this pending disruption but this has generated a slew of unanswered questions. Most particularly are the time  frames that begin the dominoes falling.

In the case of SMC, we expect to receive written notification from the city with regards to the need to vacate 90 Union Square. Additionally we need an idea of the time horizon we are working with as far as being offsite - 6 to 8 months? 10-12 months? As can be seen, this may require a follow-up meeting to before setting anything into motion.

LETTER 3
Emily,

Thank you for the response. We truly appreciate all the Mayor's office is doing to help SMC navigate this process. Tom Galligani has reached out -- most recently scheduling an upcoming potential site visit this Friday. And we look forward to the continued dialog with Denise Taylor (meeting on the 10th) with regards to the vulnerability of the Franchise Agreement funding model. SMC looks forward to continued cooperation and support as we face the difficult tasks ahead.

Sincerely,

Brian Zipp
