Medford Oregon's Economic Engine

vs

Medford Mass. ripping off the residents and seniors as its Economic Engine

Oregon is a diverse state geographically with something for everyone. Mountains. Beaches. Deserts. Forests. Economically, dividing the state is much simpler. There's metropolitan Portland and areas close enough to benefit from the city's infrastructure and amenities – notably the upper Willamette Valley and the Columbia River Gorge. Then, there's everything else.
Oregon's post-recession economy
It’s been almost six years since the great recession started and more than four years since it ended, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. But with unemployment still at 8.1 percent in Oregon, recovery is a relative term. This is the third  installment of an occasional editorial series looking at how the deepest recession in more than 70 years changed Oregon’s economy and how the state should respond to the challenges it faces.
Sure, there are minor economic differences among outlying regions. But since the timber industry started declining more than 30 years ago, economic winds in Oregon have blown strongly in favor of Portland. The one exception was the early 2000s. When the dotcom bubble burst and sent the United States into recession in 2001, most of the damage in Oregon occurred in the technology-heavy Portland metro area. The Great Recession, in contrast, hammered the entire state. But Portland is recovering more rapidly than other areas are.

What needs to happen for Bend and Medford to continue to grow? To a large degree, businesses in these cities need the same things that businesses in Portland need. But Bend and Medford always will be more dependent on small employers. The Legislature's move to reduce small-business taxes should pay dividends. Further easing regulatory burdens, particularly for startups, also would help. Maintaining and improving transportation infrastructure, including airports, also is important. In Bend, continued expansion of course offerings at Oregon State University-Cascades will make the area more attractive to employers.
