Dr. Joan Salge Blake, a nutritionist at Boston University, said there are certain things children should look for.
"Do the tables look dirty? Are there crumbs on the floor? If they see the table is dirty, the fork is dirty or the plate is dirty, they should go home and tell their parents," Salge Blake said.
"A child's immune system is not as robust as an adult. They're still growing. So they are more susceptible to food-borne illnesses," she said.
Most towns and cities do not post their inspection reports online, so parents who want to know what's happening inside their child's cafeteria should contact their local health department or school.
Here are notable violations we uncovered through open records requests:

MEDFORD
McGlynn Elementary School: "No allergen training posted." (May 30, 2018)
Andrews Middle: "Pest droppings observed beneath 3 bay sink. Fill in holes w/ steel wool, properly clean up and remove droppings." (Nov. 9, 2017) https://www.boston25news.com/news/dirty-kitchen-what-s-in-your-kid-s-school-cafeteria-/1008204328/

ESSAY

Medford - allegedly an employee of the Medford school system was marched out of a building - allegedly a person doing CORI checks who didn't have a CORI check on himself. Despite a determination by the Sec. of State's office for the school to be forthright with us, they've refused to answer - and I have named the person and they still refuse. Then that November story about rat droppings allegedly at the Andrews Middle School (Fox 25 News/Boston 25 News Nov 14, 2019) - well there are more allegations concerning the Andrews. So under Muccini-Burke and the new superintendent, and the school committee, are things being swept under the rug? The previous superintendent didn't take responsibility for the hiring of Jenna Tarabelsi, convicted October 13, 2017, and another couple of teachers involved allegedly in similar situations. Remember when the school defended the hiring of Heidi Riccio? "“It was a great honor because the hard work to keep this program intact has paid off,” Riccio said of the Educator of the Year honors in the release.

The school’s communications specialist Liana Measmer, who sent the release to The Eagle-Tribune, declined to say where the incorrect information came from.

“I can’t answer that question,” said Measmer. “The lawyer told me I can’t comment right now.”
