SALEM (CBS/AP) — Teenager Philip Chism was sentenced Friday
to serve at least 40 years in prison for the rape and murder of Danvers
High School teacher Colleen Ritzer in 2013.
“The crashing waves of this tragedy will never wane,” Salem Superior Court Judge David Lowy said as he handed down a sentence of 25 years for the murder and 40 years and one day for raping and robbing Ritzer. Those sentence will be served concurrently, at the same time, which means Chism will not be eligible parole for 40 years.
Chism showed no emotion as the sentence was read.

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts teenager who was 14 when he raped and killed his math teacher has been sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole in 25 years.
Seventeen-year-old Philp Chism was sentenced Friday in Salem Superior Court in the slaying of Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer in 2013.
The judge pronounced the sentence after hearing victim-impact statements from Ritzer’s parents, siblings and colleagues. Many of them wore pink, her favorite color.
